Honeywell Vent Sanitizing: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If your Honeywell vent sanitizing unit has stopped working or is throwing an error code, we can replace it. We stock Honeywell-compatible UV sanitizing lamps and ballasts on our trucks and typically install them the same visit, with most Austin jobs landing between $285 and $480 installed. Most owners discover the failure two ways: the unit goes dark with no visible glow at the plenum, or the system starts cycling on and off for no apparent reason.
Here’s what we’ve learned running these calls across Austin, from Tarrytown bungalows to newer builds out in Steiner Ranch: the Honeywell UV lamp doesn’t fail suddenly. It degrades. A lamp that’s been running 18 months might still glow, but its sanitizing output has dropped well below the threshold that does any good. That’s why Honeywell’s own guidance calls for annual lamp replacement, regardless of whether the bulb still lights. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Honeywell, but we work with their equipment daily and know its quirks.
Which Honeywell Models This Applies To
The Honeywell UV2400 and UV4800 series are what we see most often in Austin homes, usually mounted in the supply plenum above the evaporator coil. The lamp itself is a UV-C bulb, but the real compatibility question is the ballast. Honeywell changed ballast connectors between the 2400 and 4800 lines, so a lamp from one won’t seat in the other without an adapter that we generally advise against using. Check the silver label on the ballast body: the model number is printed there, not on the lamp.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for the ballast, we strongly recommend OEM Honeywell. Aftermarket ballasts we’ve tested run the lamps at slightly lower output, which defeats the purpose of sanitizing. For the lamp itself, there are quality aftermarket options that meet the same UV-C output spec, and we stock both. The spec that matters is the 254-nanometer wavelength and the proper fixture length, not the brand printed on the glass.

Signs Your Honeywell Vent Sanitizing Is Failing
- The lamp won’t light, and you’ve already cycled power. If the ballast LED is blinking rather than solid, that’s a ballast fault, not a lamp issue. We see this most often after Austin’s summer lightning storms.
- Visible glow, but it’s dim or flickering. A lamp past its service life still glows, but it’s producing a fraction of the sanitizing UV-C output. Any lamp over 12 months old should be tested, not eyeballed.
- A faint ozone smell near the air handler. Some Honeywell models produce minimal ozone by design, but a stronger smell usually means the lamp is arcing or the seal has failed, which is a replace rather than repair situation.
- Intermittent operation without a clear pattern. This points to a failing ballast. It’s not a loose wire, and tightening connections won’t fix it. The ballast is the part that fails first on these units, and it fails more often in attics, where Austin heat pushes operating temperatures past spec.
- The unit is dark but power checks out at the outlet. We see this after tripped breakers from other HVAC issues. If the transformer inside the unit has gone, it’s cheaper to replace the unit outright than rebuild it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Austin-area Honeywell vent sanitizing replacements, you’re looking at $285 to $480 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping just the lamp or the lamp plus ballast. A lamp-only replacement for a UV2400 runs $285 to $350. A full lamp-and-ballast replacement on the UV4800 lands between $410 and $480. The labor is the same either way: we’re in and out in under an hour, and the price includes testing the unit at the plenum with a UV-C meter, not just confirming the bulb lights.
Every quote is a written price handed to you before we touch anything, and it doesn’t change at the door. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right within a year, we return and correct it at no charge. We also give a written guarantee on every repair, with a free second visit if the repair fails. Simple terms, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
You can check the model label, visually confirm whether the lamp is glowing, and kill power at the breaker. That’s where DIY should end. UV-C lamps operate at high voltage through the ballast, and the lamp itself gets hot enough to burn skin during operation, not to mention that direct UV-C exposure is harmful to eyes and skin. It’s not a complicated repair for someone with the right training and a meter, but it is not a handyman job. Omar Haddad and our crew have been doing this work across Austin for years, and we carry the Honeywell-compatible parts on the truck. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, call (940) 283-6595 and describe what the unit is doing. We’ll tell you straight whether it’s a lamp, a ballast, or something else entirely.
FAQs
Honeywell rates the lamps for 12 months of continuous operation, and we’ve found that’s accurate for Austin conditions. After 12 months, the UV-C output drops sharply even though the lamp still glows. If you run your HVAC heavily through our long cooling season, the lamp ages faster. Replacement is annual, no exceptions. Call (940) 283-6595 to schedule a lamp swap or a full unit check.
No. Ballasts are sealed units, and once they fail, they fail for good. The labor to open one up, if it were possible, would cost more than a new OEM ballast. We stock OEM Honeywell ballasts on the truck, so the swap is quick and clean. For a fast quote, call (940) 283-6595.
Most Honeywell lamp replacements are done in under an hour. If we’re doing the ballast too, allow 90 minutes. The work is done at the plenum, which usually means no duct removal and no mess beyond what’s already in the air handler. Call (940) 283-6595 and we’ll give you a live arrival window you can track.
We stock Honeywell UV2400 and UV4800 compatible lamps and OEM ballasts on our trucks, so in most cases we handle it on the first visit. If you have an older Honeywell model we don’t stock, we can source the correct part typically within a few days. We also keep parts for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems for the surrounding HVAC work that often comes up. Call (940) 283-6595 and we’ll confirm compatibility over the phone.
